CHAPTER 1: THE ARCHWAY SQUATTER The rattling heater of the old work truck spat out lukewarm air, doing little to cut the sharp, high-desert chill rolling off the eastern slopes of the Cascades. Hugo Talbot kept one hand on his lukewarm coffee mug, his eyes fixed on the wrought iron monstrosity spanning the gravel road […]
CHAPTER 1: THE WEIGHT OF STOLEN SAGE The air off the Cascades tasted like cold iron and dry juniper, the kind of sharpness that settled deep in the throat before a storm. Wyatt Holloway kept his boots planted on the gravel, his thumbs hooked loosely into the belt loops of his work pants. Fifty yards […]
CHAPTER 1: The Weight of the Badge The smell of aviation fuel was a sharp, chemical sting that clung to the back of Griffin’s throat, masking the natural, sweet scent of the evening dew. He stood perfectly still in the tall, unkempt wheat that remained at the property’s edge, his silhouette lost in the long, […]
CHAPTER 1: THE FROST LINE The metal inside my left knee didn’t appreciate a Colorado December. When the temperature dropped toward the negative digits, the damp cold settled deep into the hardware, turning every step across the gravel into a deliberate calculation of pain. I killed the truck’s engine, the dying rattle of the old […]
CHAPTER 1: The Weight of Silence I stood in the center of what used to be my living room, the space now occupied by nothing but air and the bitter, cloying scent of fresh mulch. It was 3:00 a.m. My dress blues were heavy, stiff with the grit of a desert that felt a lifetime […]
CHAPTER 1: The Weight of Concrete The concrete truck was a monstrous, rotating tomb of gray sludge, and it was currently violating the sanctity of the only thing my grandfather had left me. CHAPTER 1: THE SOUND OF BROKEN STEEL The driveway of 142 Pinewood Circle was not a place of transition; it was a graveyard of ambition. My $15,000 plow, once a monument to fifteen years of reliable labor, lay in a twisted heap of mangled steel and weeping hydraulic lines. The windows had been shattered inward, […]
CHAPTER 1: THE DRIVEWAY SHORTCIRCUIT The frost on my lawn crunched like broken glass under the officers’ heavy boots. 6:30 a.m. The sun hadn’t even cleared the Rockies yet, but the driveway was already a stage set for a bureaucratic hit job. Two cruisers sat idling, their exhaust venting gray plumes into the sub-zero air, […]
CHAPTER 1: The Weight of Ink The eviction notice crackled in my grip, the weight of the paper feeling heavier than it had any right to. 6:17 a.m. The silence of the morning was shattered only by the distant, rhythmic clicking of sprinklers—the heartbeat of Sunset Ridge. Brenda Kesler had not just slid a document […]
