CHAPTER 1: THE FIRST CIRCUIT The air in the workshop was thick with the smell of ozone and machine oil—the scent of a system running perfectly. My workbench was a landscape of precision: calipers, copper wire stripped to the strand, and the labeled binders that held every invoice, permit, and property document I’d collected since […]
CHAPTER 1: The Weight of Paper The mint green cardigan didn’t move with the urgency of a thief. It moved with the entitlement of a homeowner checking her own property. I watched from the kitchen window, the glass cool against my forehead, while she walked the short distance from my cluster mailbox bank back to […]
CHAPTER 1: THE WEIGHT OF THE WATER The smell of chlorine hung heavy in the humid Texas air, thick enough to taste. It was a familiar scent, one that usually signaled relaxation, but tonight it felt like a trap. I sat in the center of the Jacuzzi, the jets churning the water into a frantic […]
CHAPTER 1: THE WEIGHT OF GALVANIZED STEEL The sound of the padlock settling into the hasp was louder than it had any right to be. It was a sharp, final clack that cut through the low hum of the wind sweeping across the flat Oklahoma plains. I sat in the driver’s seat of my truck, […]
CHAPTER 1: THE EMPTY APRON The space where the John Deere 5075E should have been was now just a rectangle of undisturbed, gray-white gravel. It was 11:45 a.m. on a Tuesday. The silence of my own land felt heavier than usual, pressing in against the sides of the workshop like water against a dam. I […]
CHAPTER 1: THE MATHEMATICS OF DEFEAT The community center smelled of stale coffee and the damp, metallic tang of the lake, a scent that usually signaled peace but tonight felt like a countdown. Garrett Hollis sat at the edge of the board’s long, mahogany table, his hands resting flat against his thighs. He didn’t fidget. […]
CHAPTER 1: THE INTRUDERS The Chevelle didn’t belong. It was a machine of chrome and deep, polished crimson, looking like a drop of spilled blood on the neutral gray of my workshop floor. A few feet away, a Thunderbird and a Jaguar E-Type completed the unauthorized gallery. They were beautiful, yes, but they were a […]
CHAPTER 1: THE RADIUS OF THE FENCE “You’re making a four-minute mistake, Mr. Wolfe.” I didn’t look up. I kept the tape measure locked at sixteen feet, the yellow metal blade vibrating slightly in the wind. The air smelled of impending rain and the heavy, floral cloy of perfume that didn’t belong in a hay […]
CHAPTER 1: THE WEIGHT OF A FINE The moisture from the morning mist had turned the driveway gravel into a dark, slick slurry that crunched like bone under the tires of the pearl-white Cadillac. Garrett didn’t look up from the engine bay of his F-250. He knew the sound of that car. It had a […]
CHAPTER 1: THE VIBRATION OF THE CAB The diesel idles at a low, guttural thrum that I usually feel in the marrow of my teeth. It’s a productive sound. It’s the sound of twelve tons of iron ready to move earth. But this morning, the vibration feels different—sharper, like a wire being pulled taut across […]
