CHAPTER 1: THE COLD THRESHOLD The rain didn’t fall; it hammered the porch roof like gravel dumped from a truck. Dad’s hand gripped the brass knob of the front door, his knuckles white against the dark oak finish. Behind him, standing on the polished hardwood of the entryway, my mother held a trembling twelve-year-old Madison […]
CHAPTER 1: THE COLD CALL The sharp, rhythmic buzz of the pager on my nightstand didn’t just wake me; it cut straight through four hours of heavy, restless sleep. I sat up instantly, swinging my legs over the edge of the mattress. Cold air hit my bare ankles, instantly clearing the fog from my brain. […]
CHAPTER 1: THE COLD DINING TABLE The spoon hit the glass with a sharp, metallic ping that cut right through the smell of roasted turkey and cinnamon. Lauren stood up at the head of the long oak table, her five-month bump pressed tight against the fabric of her cream-colored sweater. Her posture was flawless, her […]
CHAPTER 1: THE COLD MEASURE The amber light from the converted library’s high vaults filtered softly through my glass of cabernet, casting long, blurred shadows across the white linen. “Mom, you’re squinting again,” Nathan said, his voice dripping with smooth, practiced sympathy as he reached across the table to pat my hand. “You’ve spent thirty-five […]
CHAPTER 1: THE MISSED EXIT The windshield wipers beat a lazy, ragged rhythm against the glass, smearing the yellow halo of every streetlamp into a long streak of grease. CHAPTER 1: SHADOWS ON THE GRAVEL The gravel dust had barely settled behind Lucas’s sedan when the front porch light flickered and died. I stood on the bottom step, the chill of the late Oregon November biting straight through my cardigan. Across the yard, the treeline pressed close, dark and thick with damp pine. Forty-one […]
CHAPTER 1: THE SHATTERED MIRROR The grocery cart wheel wobbled with a steady, rhythmic squeak against the linoleum. I kept my eyes fixed on the rows of black beans, holding a single tin in my palm just to feel its cold, heavy weight. Six months of waking up to a silent mattress made a person […]
CHAPTER 1: THE ALUMINUM CHAIR The iron gates of the Grant estate swung open with a dull screech that echoed against the wet gravel. I kept my hands steady on the steering wheel, easing the station wagon past the manicured lavender hedges and the pristine white columns of the main house. A young valet in […]
CHAPTER 1: THE ATTIC DISCOVERY The light coming through the lone attic window was dull and thick with the dust of thirty years. I wiped a layer of gray grime off a cardboard box, the coarse paper scratching against my palm, while the sharp smell of decaying paper filled my throat. Across the narrow aisle, […]
CHAPTER 1: THE KITCHEN THRESHOLD Thirty pairs of polished shoes filled my parents’ living room, but all I could focus on was the greasy film of gravy on my thumbs. I stood by the double-basin sink in the kitchen of the white colonial, scraping scorched stuffing off a copper pan with a blunt butter knife. […]
