CHAPTER 1: Shadows Gather Outside The brass pocket watch clicked shut in Salvatore’s palm. The heavy metal felt cold against his sweating skin, grounding the raw fury threatening to break his focus. Across the living room, Elena gripped the pistol with white-knuckled desperation. Her hands trembled, but her eyes held a hard, unyielding edge that […]
CHAPTER 1: THE WEIGHT OF WOOD Daniel interlaced his fingers until the knuckles turned white. The blue t-shirt he wore was clean, but it felt impossibly thin against the cold draft drifting across the defendant’s table. Every surface in the room was polished mahogany and brass, designed to tell anyone who walked past that they […]
CHAPTER 1: THE RAINING LIBRARY Arthur Sterling kept his breathing slow, steady, and entirely artificial. His frail seventy-five-year-old frame was slumped deep into the burgundy velvet of his favorite armchair, looking like a harmless old man lost to an afternoon nap. On the mahogany table inches from his relaxed hand sat an open envelope spilling […]
CHAPTER 1: THE COLD PANTRY FLOOR Sophie held her breath against the humming metal of the industrial freezer. Her bare feet made no sound on the polished stone as the shadow lengthened across the floor. The bowl of macaroni slipped from her trembling fingers. Porcelain shattered against tile, sending yellow-orange pasta scattering into the open. […]
CHAPTER 1: The Cold Threshold The asphalt under Victory’s bare feet radiated heat like an open oven. CHAPTER 1: THE MOCKED METAL The gasoline smelled stale in the heat. Sergeant William Miller wiped a smear of black grease across his forehead and stared up at the empty gray sky. CHAPTER 1: THE COLD HORIZON The frost bit hard into the canvas of the observation post roof. Staff Sergeant Irvin Schwarz rubbed his numb fingers together, blowing a plume of white breath over the scarred metal of his slide rule. Down in the valley, the snow-covered evergreens stood dead still against the pale gray dawn. […]
CHAPTER 1: FROZEN METAL The metal beneath my boots radiates a bitter, biting cold that seeps right through the soles of my leather boots. At twenty-five thousand feet, the air doesn’t just feel thin; it feels dead. I squeeze the trigger once. Nothing happens. The grip remains stubbornly cold, devoid of the familiar buck and […]
CHAPTER 1: THE SCRAP YARD The corrugated iron roof of the Eagle Farm workshop groaned under the weight of the midday heat, radiating a dry, punishing stillness that turned the air inside into a thick soup of oil and burning rubber. I wiped the sweat from my forehead with the back of a bare forearm, […]
CHAPTER 1: THE REJECTED TOOL The gate at Camp Perry smelled of wet gravel and hot oil. Henry held the wooden stock of his Winchester Model 70 against his leg, trying to keep the gray canvas wrap from sagging. The instructor didn’t even look up from his clipboard. What the hell is that, private? My […]
